Hillesum is the first person whose words make me think of ‘enlightenment’ in the personal sense, and I cringe as I write this. She of course never uses the word, least of all for herself. But makes me think of what it may look like, feel like, taste like. That it may exist in the world, as lived, as humanly possible.
